Starting and running a successful business is a skill. And the good news is that every skill can be learnt. Once learnt, starting and running a successful business becomes a walkover.

Many people dream about going into business for themselves and quitting a job that seems to be going nowhere. Studies have shown that 70% of all working adults dream of owning their own business but only one in every seven actually do. Unfortunately of those who do, only two out of every five small business owners make it past their five-year mark.

This disheartening and discouraging situation is the result of unskillful and uninitiated men and women in the business arena. Friend, the only escape route is your willingness to acquire necessary business skills.

What is skill? Skill is the ability to do something well, usually gained through training or experience.

Your road map to achieving skill:

Skill comes from confidence. Confidence comes from experience. Experience comes from practice. Practice comes from commitment. And commitment comes from vision.

Now do the arithmetic backward and you have a road map to business skill and success. Please note that it all starts with a vision.

“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” Pro 29:18

It all starts with a vision

In your journey into becoming a skillful business person, you need to first equip yourself with a valid vision; vision of yourself as a skillful business person.

This must be a vision you personally value, and are passionate about. This is one place you must be true to yourself, because without this, the commitment your vision should generate will be weak if present in the first place.

Once your vision is strong enough, the will to commit to it will be almost an automatic thing. Once there is a commitment to become skillful in doing business; reading, attending seminars and training programs, listening to CDs and generally the willingness to learning will no longer be burdensome. Making necessary sacrifices in studying, learning and practicing will not be a hassle.

Practice is the mother of skill. Practice is the key to mastering any skill. This is a crucial part of the equation for skill acquisition, you need to practice and keep on practicing even if you experienced temporary defeat.

Experience will teach you that temporary defeat does not spell failure. And as a result, you would not be moved, because you would have developed an understanding that it is nothing; but as its name suggests a “temporary” set back which is common to all men and women of skill. It is in learning and practicing what new ideas we are picking that we acquire experience.

You must never be scared of making mistakes because Success truly is the result of good judgment. Good judgment is the result of experience, and experience is often the result of bad judgment.

This experience will ultimately lead to confidence which is considered the backbone of skill.
